The bicycle highway is a proposed structure designed to alleviate traffic
density, air pollution and obesity. A roadway designated solely for bicyclists would allow for a
greater volume of safe, comfortable daily commuter traffic, thus alleviating congestion on other
roadways, cutting back on greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing the Nation’s dependence on
foreign oil. Because of the many benefits of such an infrastructure, bicycling would become
more prevalent. This project will enhance human health, begin to establish sustainable travel,
and promote ecologically responsible energy usage.
